CHARLOTTE, N.C. (May 2004) — Andrea Thomas was named Staff Person of the Year at the 2004 Awards Convocation at Queens University of Charlotte.
Andrea has been a staff member at Queens for 2 years. She is the Coordinator of Administration and Special Programs for University Advancement and was elected to serve on Staff Council this year.
She is also majoring in English and will graduate next year. Her passion is poetry. She loves to read, write and especially teach it. Andrea says she would love to teach children the value of expressing themselves through poetry.
Originally from Brooklyn, she was able to do just that four years ago in Spring Valley, NY where she was employed as an Administrative Coordinator at the Edwin Gould Academy. Edwin Gould is a co-residential home for approximately 172 boys and girls between the ages of 12-18, predominantly from the folster care system. There, she taught poetry and drama to children as a vehicle to help them express a lot of the anger they were experiencing. She loved it!
With earning a degree and having an active hobby writing, it is especially impressive that she is also very well respected and a well-recognized dedicated professional. Congratulations Andrea — you deserve it!
Faculty and Staff who nominated Andrea had kind words about her:
She is well known for her “can-do attitude, plus her ability to interface successfully with all members of a large department without losing her cool.” She is a “Hayworth Student, in her senior year, earning excellent grades. Her interaction with faculty and other students demonstrates her deep interest in her studies”. She is “intelligent, organized, and has an excellent sense of humor.” “She is always professional and kind in all dealings with superiors, subordinates, colleagues, students and visitors to Queens.” |
