The William S. Lee Distinguished Professor Award was established in 1990 to recognize the full-time teaching faculty member at Queens University of Charlotte who has done the most to enhance and promote understanding and cooperation between science and mathematics and the other academic divisions of the university.
The award honors the late William S. Lee, retired chairman of Duke Power Company, who served on the Queens board of trustees for many years, including four years as chairman. His life and work as an engineer and a scientist were motivated by the vision of a just, enlightened, competent and humane world order.
The 2004 recipient is an outstanding teacher who is passionate, highly knowledgeable, and inspiring. Students comment that this professor's enthusiasm and respect for the subject matter is contagious, and that she has a unique and refreshing gift of actively engaging students in the learning process. Students also appreciate her sense of humor, compassion, and genuineness.
This professor received the bachelor's degree from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, the master's degree from the University of Nevada, and the doctorate from the University of South Carolina. She has taught at Winthrop University, and joined the Queens faculty in 1990.
This professor's service to the Queens community is outstanding: as team leader in the Core Program in the Liberal Arts, as a study tour leader in the John Belk International Program (including its first trip to Australia), as a member of Faculty Council, and as Director of the Freshman Writing Program. She has done much to integrate the sciences and the humanities in freshman writing courses on the study of nature and in helping both students and colleagues understand the connections in the Core Program.
With deep appreciation for all this faculty member's hard work and commitment to the educational process, Queens University of Charlotte names as the 2004 William S. Lee Distinguished Professor:
