CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Drama Program at Queens University of Charlotte will present William Shakespeare’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” Nov. 5-7 at 8 p.m. and Nov. 8 at 2 p.m. The production will be performed in the university’s Hadley Theatre, which is attached to Myers Park Traditional School.
Although “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” is a classical play, Queens’ production, directed and arranged by Jane Hadley and Kara Wooten, is far from traditional. The seating will form a triangle around the stage to include the audience in the performance. “The stage placement is very unique,” says Co-director Kara Wooten. “Both the actors and the audience are in the round together.”
Queens Theater has injected much originality into the production. The university’s students wrote all of the music, designed and built the set and created all of the lighting effects. The production also features cast members from Myers Park Traditional School. Queens University of Charlotte also hired well-known stunt director Steve Wilsher (Toronto, ON) of Havoc Stunts to lead the special effects rigging. Jim Martin and Ryan Watts also assisted with technical elements.
"A Midsummer Night's Dream" is one of William Shakespeare’s most recognizable comedies featuring a complex farce that involves two sets of couples whose romantic intrigues are complicated by entering the forest where Oberon, the King of the Fairies, and his Queen Titania preside. Meanwhile, other visitors to the enchanted forest want to rehearse their dire but hilarious rendering of the play "Pyramus and Thisbe."
Tickets are $6 per person at the door. Parking will be located at Myers Park Traditional School, 2132 Radcliffe Ave., Charlotte, NC 28207.
