This study tour will introduce students to the fascinating, brilliant world of ancient Greece, "the cradle of Western civilization." The program begins on the island of Crete, center of the charming and mysterious Minoan civilization; there will be visits to the amazing Palace of Knossos (King Minos and the Minotaur), the Heraclean Museum, and to the varied Cretan villages, countryside and coasts. The next stop is the crescent-shaped, gleaming white, volcanic island of Santorini, for a different taste of Greek life, the ruins of ancient Thira (the "Greek Pompeii") and the many other attractions of the island. On the mainland, while staying in the picturesque seaside village of Napflion, the students will visit the stunning remains of Mycenaean civilization—Agamemnon's stronghold at Mycenae and Theseus's fortress at Tiryns. Then the group travels to the world of Classical Greece, from Epidaurus and Corinth through the mountains to Delphi, home of the oracle of Apollo. Concluding the program in Athens, students will visit important classical sites such as the Parthenon and the Acropolis, the National Archeological Museum, the Museum of Cycladic and Ancient Greek Art (both of which hold the world’s most outstanding collections) and the Pláka, Sýntagma Square and Monastiráki. |
