This program will include a week-long service project to be based either in the Cape Town area or in the Limpopo province in the village of Shalati. This project, yet to be determined, will allow students to connect with locals and put into action Queens’ motto “Not to be served, but to serve.” In addition, students will explore the history, landscape and culture of Cape Town and the surrounding region. Visits will include Robben Island (where Nelson Mandela and many others were imprisoned during the Apartheid era), the South African National Gallery, the Castle of Good Hope and visits to local townships and neighborhoods to learn about the diversity of cultures in this “Rainbow Nation.” Day trips outside of the city will include a tour of the Cape Peninsula’s small towns, scenic vistas and the African Penguin colony and an exploration of the Wineland. From Cape Town, the study tour will head toward Kruger National Park, one of the world’s most famous natural preserves for a “safari” where students will learn about the “bush” on walks and game drives. Students will no doubt encounter a variety of animals out here in their natural habitat. Finally, in the Johannesburg area, students will confront South Africa’s segregated past on a tour of Soweto Township and a visit to the stark and moving Apartheid Museum. Students will also visit the Cradle of Humankind and the Art Museum. |
