2008 Nurse Educators Institute (August 4-7 and August 11-13)
*A new 45-hour program taught over 2 weeks to prepare nurse educators as required by the North Carolina State Board of Nursing.
Class Time: 8:30 am — 4:30 pm daily (Week 1: Mon-Thur, Week 2: Mon-Wed) Class Location: Presbyterian School of Nursing, (Classroom #6), Charlotte, NC
Course Description:
In this course the student will study the components of the nurse educator role in the academic settings. Included will be adult learning theories, legal/ethical issues, learning styles, curriculum development, learning objectives, teaching strategies, diversity in education, evaluation methods, syllabus writing, online education and personal qualities of effective teachers. Course will be presented by a group of teaching professionals selected for their special expertise from the Queens School of Nursing .

Course Objectives:
- Describe the current role of faculty in an academic setting.
- Analyze the impact of societal trends and scientific knowledge on nursing education.
- Use Adult Learning Theory in various aspects of the teaching/learning process.
- Assess personal qualities and behaviors of teachers that foster learning.
- Identify tools that identify student learning styles.
- Identify legal and ethical dimensions of nursing education.
- Develop a course of study that includes the components of nursing school curriculum design.
- Use educational taxonomies to guide the construction of goals and objectives in a curriculum.
- Write a syllabus that includes all essential components.
- Select teaching methods compatible with learning objectives including clinical education and simulation.
- Select teaching strategies suitable to learners based on learning styles and diversity.
- Analyze the evidence base for assorted teaching strategies.
- Discuss the application of teaching/learning principles to online learning
- Modify a course syllabus for use in an online environment
- Use a variety of methods to evaluate the outcomes of teaching approaches on student learning.
- Identify opportunities for continued professional development.
- Examine various standards & organizations for accrediting nursing education in both academic & practice settings.
- Describe the components of a plan for systematic evaluation of curricula.

Legal Aspects of Nursing Documentation
This one-day program will explore the most common legal perils facing today’s nurse. Some of the topics that will be examined include lawsuit trends, high-risk practice areas, high-risk situations/communications and strategies to help avoid being named in a lawsuit. Heavy emphasis is placed on documentation as this is the most frequent source of litigation for nurses. Participants are highly encouraged to bring specific questions/concerns. Time will also be allotted for participants with an interest in pursuing a medical-legal career. *Due to course dynamics, space is limited. Early registration is strongly encouraged. 7.0 contact hours will be awarded for this course.
Instructor: Pam Collins, RN, MSN, CMSRN, LNC has more than 15 years experience in the medical-legal field. She is the founder and CEO of Consultation On-Call, a consulting firm that specializes in continuing education, performance improvement and medical-legal services. She is a national speaker and has presented extensively throughout the country on legal and clinical topics.

Nurse Aide I Training Program
The Nurse Aide I program prepares students to provide respected health care services in a field that is in high demand. This course consists of both classroom and clinical training and is open to individuals in the community as well as those individuals entering the Queens Presbyterian School of Nursing program or other nursing programs. At the end of the course, students take a comprehensive exam in preparation for their state competency exam. All instructors are experienced RN’s and possess at minimum of a BSN degree.
Location: All classes take place at the Presbyterian School of Nursing, 5th Street Campus (Registration confirmation will include directions to campus/parking and required documentation.)
Tuition: $450 plus Textbook: $40 (Includes a 10% discount-textbook will be given to students on the first day of class). As part of the clinical requirements, students will have a criminal background check performed on the first day of class. Associated fees will be collected at that time.
Day Sessions 8:00 AM TO 3:00 PM Monday-Thursday (The last week of class constitutes clinical and will be 6:45 am-3:15 pm)

Nurse Aide I Refresher Course
This three (3) day course is designed primariy for individuals that have an expired NC Nurse Aide I certification or have an out of state Nurse Aide I certification and are needing to take the NC state competency exam. This course reviews key information needed for preparing students to be able to complete both the written and the skills portion of the state competency exam.

Special Institute for Nurses
Faith Community Nurse Preparation Institute
Plan to attend this specialized training program that prepares registered nurses to deliver holistic, primary healthcare by focusing on the intentional care of the spirit as part of the process of promoting holistic health and preventing or minimizing illness in a faith community. The curriculum for the institute is based on the approved curriculum of the International Parish Nurse Resource Center.
Instructors: Dr. Joan S. McGill, Professor Emeritus, Vail Program of Nursing at Queens University of Charlotte. BSN, Case Western Reserve University; MSN, University of Kentucky; DSN, University of Alabama at Birmingham. Nursing expertise in gerontology, global health, curriculum and leadership. She is a trained leader in Stephen Ministry and has completed the Parish Nurse Preparation Institute and Faculty Preparation Institute from the International Parish Nurse Resource Center. During her tenure at Queens University of Charlotte, Dr. McGill worked for a number of years co-sponsoring the Parish Nurse Institute with Presbyterian Hospital. Since her retirement, she has coordinated the institute through Lifelong Learning at Queens University of Charlotte.
Janie Best, Instructor, Presbyterian School of Nursing at Queens University of Charlotte has also completed Parish Nursing . She has also completed training from the Parish Nurse Preparation Institute and the International Parish Nurse Resource Center. (Other presenters include experts from health ministry, parish nursing, and theology.)
