Creative Writing (Critique)
Do you have a novel, short story, or essay in the beginning stages but need help developing it? Do you want to learn how to bring your characters and dialogue to life? In this class, we focus on increasing your skills as a writer and on polishing your work. The class will be structured around in-class exercises, close reading and critique from both the teacher and your peers.

Poetry Chop-Shop & Repair
If you're a poet with a file full of failed poems, this is the class for you. We'll develop new strategies to get those broken down poems up and running, while closely reading each other's work and that of well-known poets. Our emphasis will be on opening our poems to more depth and difficulty, giving ourselves permission to be creative.

Rewriting Family Stories
An in-depth, highly individualized critique class for writing memoirs or family stories. Each month, students bring their writing to class for supportive feedback on how to craft great stories. You’ll be delighted how revision inspires more writing.
Instructor: Gilda Morina Syverson has taught in the creative arts for over 35 years. Her award-winning Italian family stories and poems have appeared in numerous literary journals, magazines and anthologies in the U.S. and Canada. Her commentaries have been aired on Charlotte’s NPR station. She was awarded the 2006 Deane Ritch Lomax Poetry Prize and is author of a collection of poems, In this Dream Everything Remains Inside.

Spinning Words into Gold
This class will jumpstart your writing life and provide the tools to keep your words flowing. Learn specific techniques and exercises to create nonfiction, poetry and/or fiction as we tap into the Who’s, Why's, When’s, Where’s, What’s and How’s of writing. Whether you would like to keep a journal for your own personal growth, spin stories for your loved ones, or further a career as a professional writer, experience the satisfaction of developing a writing practice that works for you-come spin your words into gold!

The Process of Poetry withTony Abbott - FULL!
A seven week poetry workshop in which students will submit poems each week for analysis by the instructor and class members. Textbook is "Selected Poems" by William Carlos Williams. (New Directions Paperback 602). Students may purchase from Park Road Books prior to class.
Each week students will read and study a number of poems to understand how Williams's poems help individuals understand the workings of poetry and how to write their own poems. (Seats are limited)
Instructor: Anthony S. Abbott, the Charles A. Dana Professor of English Emeritus at Davidson College where he served as Chair of the department and Director of Creative Writing for many years. Mr. Abbot t is the author of two novel s and four books of poems , the most recent book of which , The Man Who, was honored by the Poetry Council of NC as the best book of poems published by a North Carolinian in 200 7.
