Weekly H1N1 update from Queens University of Charlotte
Charlotte, N.C. (Nov. 9, 2009) – Queens University of Charlotte is closely following recommendations from the
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to try to limit the spread of the H1N1 flu virus on campus.
As of Nov. 6, 509 students have received the H1N1 vaccine on campus. Many are Presbyterian School of Nursing
students who have direct patient contact through clinical work.
“We are grateful to see our campus community acting responsibly in practicing healthy habits including
frequent hand-washing, and also to those who have reported the first onset of flu-like symptoms,” said Dean of
Students John P. Downey. “We have set several prevention efforts in motion in accordance with our Pandemic Flu
Plan, but ultimately it comes down to individual responsibility.”
As of Nov. 9, a total of 32 faculty and staff members and 123 students have reported flu-like symptoms since
classes began at Queens on Aug. 26.
The isolation policy for residential students who have flu-like illness recently changed. Students will now be
required to socially isolate themselves in their residence hall rooms while they recover, only leaving to use
the restroom or seek medical attention. They no longer have to report to a social isolation area of Barnhardt
Hall. Their roommates will be assisted by Residence Life should they choose to relocate while the ill student
recovers.
The campus Pandemic Flu Response Committee is meeting weekly and will post any new information on the Queens
Web site as needed. The university’s Pandemic Flu Plan and other information are available at
http://www.queens.edu/flu.
