Completing the FAFSA

All students are encouraged to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).  The FAFSA application process allows for a determination of your eligibility for need based grants and scholarships, work-study and student loan programs.  You are encouraged to complete the FAFSA four to six weeks before the start of classes to ensure a timely determination of your funding eligibility.  To complete the FAFSA follow the steps below:

1. Acquire a PIN.  Log on to www.pin.ed.gov and select “Apply for a PIN” from the left side of the screen. If you are a Dependent student a parent will also need to apply for a PIN.  This PIN is important because it allows you to access your FAFSA online, electronically sign your FAFSA and reapply for financial aid each year.  Your PIN is confidential so be sure to keep it in a safe place.

2. Log on to www.fafsa.ed.gov, select “Fill Out a FAFSA” and make sure you complete the FAFSA applicable to the academic year of enrollment.  Note: summer sessions are considered to be a part of the previous academic year.  If you have completed a FAFSA before, select “Renewal FAFSA”.  Be sure to have your PIN and federal income tax information on hand in order to answer the questions.

3.When prompted to do so, enter the Queens University of Charlotte school code, which is 002957.

4.Once you have completed the FAFSA, use your PIN to electronically sign the application.  If you are classified as a Dependent student, a parent will need to electronically sign as well.

Once the FAFSA has been signed and submitted, allow approximately two weeks for the Department of Education to process it and send a report to our Office of Student Financial Services.  You will receive a Student Aid Report (SAR) acknowledging your FAFSA processing.  Please review the information you reported for accuracy.

What to do if there are problems with your FAFSA

1.If your FAFSA is rejected, you must use your PIN to access your online FAFSA application and make the necessary corrections outlined on your SAR.

2.If there is a conflict with your FAFSA, denoted by a “C” on the upper right corner of your SAR, you must take the necessary steps outlined on your SAR to have it resolved.

3.If you are selected for verification you will be contacted by our Office of Student Financial Services to comlete the Federal Verification Worksheet as well as submit a copy of your federal income tax return.  If you are a Dependent student you will also need to provide your parents’ federal income tax return.  Your financial aid eligibility cannot be determined until we receive all of the required paperwork.

If any of these problems occur with your FAFSA, it may take up to an additional two weeks to make corrections and finalize your financial aid eligibility, so please send required documents as soon as possible.
