Frequently Asked Questions

1. WHO IS ELIGIBLE TO APPLY TO THE ACCELERATED BSN PROGRAM? WHAT ARE THE ADMISSIONS REQUIREMENTS?
Please visit http://www.queens.edu/nursing/programs/accelerated_bsn_admissions.asp to view the admissions criteria for the Accelerated BSN program.

2. WHAT IS THE APPLICATION DEADLINE TO APPLY TO THE ACCELERATED BSN PROGRAM?
All application materials must be received by January 15, 2010. The Office of Admissions reserves the right to extend the admissions deadline when warranted.

3. DO I NEED TO APPLY TO HAYWORTH COLLEGE OR THE COLLEGE OF ARTS AND SCIENCES PRIOR TO APPLYING TO THE ACCELERATED PROGRAM?
Applicants should not apply to Hayworth College or the College of Arts and Sciences. They should apply directly to the Presbyterian School of Nursing. Please visit http://www.queens.edu/nursing/programs/accelerated_bsn_admissions.asp for complete application requirements.

4. WILL THE ADMISSIONS COMMITTEE CONSIDER GRADUATE LEVEL WORK WHEN DETERMINING MY CUMULATIVE GPA?
Graduate-level work will be considered during the admissions decision process.

5. IF I AM CHOSEN AS A TOP CANDIDATE, WHEN/WHERE WILL MY INTERVIEW TAKE PLACE?
If you are selected to come in for an interview, you will receive a letter in the mail with details concerning the time and place. 
 
6. I READ SOMETHING ABOUT AN ESSAY. WHEN DO I WRITE THIS? WHAT WILL THE TOPIC BE?
You will write the essay if you are selected to come in for an interview. The topic will be chosen by the Admissions Committee.

7. WHEN WILL I KNOW IF I HAVE BEEN ACCEPTED?
All applicants will be notified of the admissions committee's decision within 4-6 weeks of the application deadline.

8. HOW MANY TIMES PER YEAR DOES THIS PROGRAM ADMIT NEW STUDENTS?
New students are admitted once a year (every summer).

9. HOW MANY STUDENTS WILL BE ADMITTED TO THE PROGRAM?
We will admit 28-32 students to the program each year.

10. CAN I APPLY TO THE PROGRAM WITH PREREQUISITES STILL IN PROGRESS?
You can apply to the program with prerequisites still in progress, but ALL prerequisites must be completed by the start of the program in May. Prospective students have the option to take the prerequisite courses at Queens by enrolling through Hayworth College. Comparable courses from an accredited college and passed with a “C” of better are eligible for transfer credit.

11. IS THERE AN ONLINE COHORT FOR THIS ACCELERATED PROGRAM?
Due to the intensity of the schedule, the nursing courses are not offered online.

12. HOW MANY DAYS PER WEEK WILL I BE ATTENDING CLASS OR CLINICALS?
Students in the Accelerated BSN program can expect to attend class any day of the week. The schedule for clinicals has yet to be determined.

13. WHERE WILL MOST OF MY CLASSES BE HELD?
Classes will be held primarily at the 5th St. campus for the Presbyterian School of Nursing (not on the main Queens campus).

14. WHAT IS THE COST OF THE PROGRAM? WHAT WILL THIS INCLUDE?
Information regarding fees and tuition costs is available on the website for Student Financial Services at http://www.queens.edu/financial/tuition_fees.asp. Tuition for the Accelerated BSN includes textbooks and uniforms.

15. IS FINANCIAL AID AVAILABLE?

16. CAN I CONTINUE WORKING FULL-TIME WHILE I PURSUE THIS DEGREE?
Due to the intensity of this prorgram, it is highly recommended that nursing students DO NOT work while enrolled.

17. CAN I START WORKING AS A NURSE AS SOON AS I GRADUATE?
The Accelerated BSN program prepares students to take the NCLEX-RN examination. Successful completion of this exam is required before you can begin working as a Registered Nurse.

18. IS THERE A "LESS ACCELERATED" OPTION FOR EARNING A BSN?
Yes. Please visit http://www.queens.edu/nursing/programs/BSN.asp for more information about our Pre-licensure BSN program. If you hold a previous bachelor's degree, you may be able to complete the traditional Pre-licensure BSN in two years.

19. IS THERE AN EVENING OPTION FOR THE ACCELERATED BSN OPTION?
This option is not offered in the evening. Two years of college-level course work are combined into twelve months (along with clinicals), which requires students to make a full-time commitment to the program.

21. CAN I STILL APPLY TO THE ABSN OPTION IF MY BACHELOR'S DEGREE WILL BE CONFERRED AROUND THE SAME TIME THAT CLASSES BEGIN?
Yes, applicants may apply to the ABSN option if the degree is conferred prior to the anticipated term of enrollment. If admitted, admissions would be contingent upon meeting the admissions requirements (which includes having a bachelor's degree from an accredited institution).
