On September 21, 2009 members of the senior class arrived at Convocation dressed in their caps and gowns for the first time. For some students, it was hard to believe they’ve made it this far. After hearing a speech from Queens professor and Hunter-Hamilton Love of Teaching Award recipient Rick Crown, the senior class walked to President Pamela Davies’ home for the Senior Reception. The seniors were able to eat lunch and enjoy one another’s company outside of the classroom. Dr. Davies also congratulated the senior class on its achievements, and spoke of all the resources available to the students as they prepare for graduation.
The Senior Class Gift was also revealed at the reception by Shaina Barlow ’08 and Emily Skipper ’10- one of the Senior Gift Coordinators. This years senior class chose to present Queens with hammocks to be placed in the residential quad for future students to enjoy. The residential quad is an area many students spend a great deal of time, especially during the warmer months. Annie Wilson ’10 noted, “Our Senior gift made me laugh. Hammocks are very representative of our senior class as a whole. They are laid back and peaceful, and I think that's the vibe we want to leave behind.”
Prior to this announcement, seniors gathered for a Senior BBQ and Town Hall meeting at the start of school to celebrate being back on campus and to begin discussing some of the important aspects of their impending graduation, one of which was the Senior Class Gift. The students wrote down their ideas for potential gifts and submitted them to the School. Those ideas were complied together into a survey, and during the following week, more than 100 seniors went online to place their votes.
Emily Skipper ’10 and Annie Wilson ’10 will work together this year as Senior Gift Coordinators to raise money for the new hammocks. Both coordinators are very excited to see what possibilities lay ahead this year as they begin fundraising. Emily Skipper noted “I’m very excited to be a Senior Gift Coordinator and I’m also excited to see the senior class come together over a common goal. I know that future students will enjoy being able to use the hammocks while studying or relaxing in the quad.”
