Dr. Becky Engen, Associate Professor of Music, wrote "Music Therapy Success Story" for the Council for Allied Health in North Carolina. The article appeared Sunday, November 1, in the 2009 Celebrating Allied Health Newspaper Insert of the News and Observer (print and online), the Fayetteville Observer (print and online) and the Asheville Citizen Times Online.
Charles Israel, Jr., English Professor, has been accepted for publication by the literary journal Zone for his short story, "The Concert Mistress Bows an A,", in October 2009.
Dr. Karen Neal, Assistant Professor of Psychology, received the National Organization for Human Services 2009 President's Award at the National Organization for Human Services Conference in Portland, Ore. The award was given to Dr. Neal "for contributions above and beyond the call of duty with her commitment and passion for the Human Service profession." She is past national membership chairman and secretary of Tau Upsilon Alpha, the human services honor society, and currently serves as national vice president.
Dr. Lily Halsted, Assistant Professor of Psychology, presented her research on bilingualism and school achievement on February 18, 2009 at the annual South Eastern Psychological Association (SEPA) conference in New Orleans.
Prof. Alexa Royden, Political Science, spoke on the topic of human rights at the Great Decisions lecture series - sponsored by UNCC and the World Affairs Council on Feb. 3. She'll be giving the same presentation for Senior Scholars on March 5. Professor Royden was also recently a guest on Charlotte Talks with Mike Collins on WFAE 90.7 FM.
Dr. Greg Pillar, Assistant Professor of Environmental Science and Chemistry, was invited to join the conversation on Charlotte Talks with Mike Collins to discuss the Global Food Supply. Dr. Pillar will also be giving a talk on the same subject as part of the Great Decisions 2009: Charlotte Community Lecture Series sponsored by UNCC and the World Affairs Council.
Charlotte Talks is a one-hour talk show produced by local listener-supported radio station, WFAE 90.7,and is a forum for issues of interest to residents in the Charlotte region. The segment featuring Dr. Pillar was aired on January 27, 2009. An archive edition will be available in the future at www.wfae.org.
Dr. J. Norris Frederick, Jones Chair of Philosophy and Religion and Director of the Center for Ethics and Religion, will present a talk at the National Conference of the Society for the Advancement of American Philosophy, March 2009, at Texas A&M in College Station, Texas. “William James, Talks to Teachers, and Healthy-Mindedness,” is one of three presentations in “Enlarging Personality: Pedagogical, Subliminal, and Social Aspects of ‘Healthy-Mindedness’.”
Dr. Suzanne Watts Henderson, Assistant Professor of Religion, presented a paper in late November at the Society of Biblical Literature’s Annual Meeting in Boston. The title of Dr. Henderson’s talk was “Gospel Truth? Taking the Bible on Its Own Terms.”
Prof. Charles Israel, Jr., of the English Department will have a short story, "To the Ani Sang Khung Nunnery," published in the moonShine review. The story is loosely based on his JBIP trip to Tibet.
Dr. Eric Mullis, Assistant Professor of Philosophy, had his essay "The Image of the Performing Body" published in The Journal of Aesthetic Education. The essay's abstract can be found here: http://jae.press.uiuc.edu/42.4/index.html.
Prof. Craig Renfroe, English Department, recently attended the 2008 Fall North Carolina Writers’ Network Conference and the Association of Writers and Writing Programs New York Conference 2008. He was also the editor for Big Water, The 2008 Main Street Rag Short Fiction Anthology and is in the process of editing Main Street Rag’s short fiction anthology for next year. Professor Renfroe’s short stories have recently appeared in decomP, roger: an art & literary magazine, Vain magazine, McSweeney’s Internet Tendency, Monkeybicycle, and many other journals. So far in 2008 he has had 11 short stories published and has two more forthcoming, “The Town Suicide” in Cemetery Dance and “The Ostrich that Cured Johnny Cash of Drugs & Booze Dies of Old Age” in the Dead Mule School of Southern Literature. His poems and reviews have been included in Kakalak 2008: An Anthology of Carolina Poets, Iodine Poetry Journal, The Pedestal Magazine, and Main Street Rag.

Courtney Stevens, a junior Philosophy-Religion major, presented a paper on Environmental Aesthetics at the annual meeting of the North Carolina Philosophical Society held February 27-28, 2009 at Wake Forest University.
Carissa Orlando, a senior Psychology major, was recently invited to participate in the Southeastern Psychological Association (SEPA) 2009 Convention held February 18-21 in New Orleans. Carissa’s submission to the conference was a poster presentation entitled, “Loneliness, Group Cohesion and Group Personality in Greek Organization Members.” SEPA is a regional psychological association affiliated with the American Psychological Association (APA).
