McColl MBA Launch Draws Crowd
Hugh McColl, namesake of the Queens University McColl School of Business, visited campus last week for the launch of the redesigned MBA. He sat down with Professor Will Sparks to share his journey, beliefs, strategies, and experience.
The crowd was packed with everyone from faculty and students to community members and Trustees. Their presence was a testament to McColl’s noteworthy influence on our institution and region. If you weren’t able to attend, you can still watch the recording.
The new MBA is highly customized and personalized to each student. If you are considering pursuing a graduate degree, now is the time! And with your Queens alumni tuition discount of 10%, the investment is worthwhile.
Looking for other ways to support the McColl School? Here are a few options:
Allow our students to work on a project for your company or host us for a graduate residency experience. Contact mccollschool@queens.edu for more details.
Jasmyn Lindsay graduated from Queens in 2016 with a major in Political Science. She soon returned to campus as an Admissions Counselor and went on to earn her MBA in 2020. Today, she is transitioning from Director of Student Financial Services to Director of Undergraduate Admissions. She is married to Emily Lindsay ’20, who received her MA from Queens and works here as well. The two have a daughter, Spencer, who is already a Royals fan!
What was your experience like as a student? How did that lead to your career?
Simply put, my experience as a student at Queens was transformational. While I’m not a first-generation college student, very few people in my family attended college. As a student at Queens, I didn’t just learn in the classroom, but I had experiences and gained skills that made me a more engaged citizen, a better listener and communicator, and a lifelong learner. I said yes to everything as a student. I was blown away by all that there was to do as a college student. When there became an opportunity for me to share those experiences and opportunities with other young people and stakeholders as a career, I thought, ‘Wow, I don’t think there could be anything cooler than this.’
What has your Queens professional journey looked like so far?
I said yes to everything. I’ve worked with students from all over the world and students joining Queens through all different paths; I’ve collaborated with campus partners in all areas of the university; I’ve represented Queens in so many places and spaces, and most importantly I’ve worked with incredible colleagues who have taught me so much about enrollment, student success, and working to serve, not to be served.
How has your MBA from Queens impacted your success?
I can’t say enough good things about my experience in the MBA program at Queens. I use skills every day that I learned in classes from my McColl School professors—skills related to data analytics, conflict resolution, marketing tactics, and effective and strategic leadership. I also built a lot of social capital in my MBA program at Queens. The Charlotte-area leaders I met and interacted with have served me many times as I’ve navigated my professional career.
What does Queens mean to you?
Queens is my second home. It has helped me grow as a student and a learner, provided me with opportunity after opportunity professionally and personally, made me lifelong friends, and given me so much pride. I could write a book about it. Hey, maybe I should!
As a former student-athlete at Queens, what do you think of the transition to DI athletics?
Watching Queens match up against schools like Clemson, Duke, or Marshall on campus and on ESPN has been thrilling. And not to brag, but we’ve won a good number of those matchups. Outside the sports arena, we have seen gains in new markets across the U.S. because of our affiliation with the Atlantic Sun Conference. We are being talked about in conversations we’ve never been a part of before, and we’re drawing community attention that extends beyond the Queen City.
What do you hope to implement as Director of Undergraduate Admissions?
I’m so fortunate to join an admissions team that is incredibly good at what they do. This is not a situation where I have to turn a ship around; it’s a situation where I get to hop on board an already highly successful train. I’m looking forward to adding to that with my deeply rooted passion for Queens, my knowledge of what it takes to bring in a strong and well-prepared class, and, more than anything, a student-first mindset.
What can alumni do to aid the admissions process?
Talk far and wide about your Queens experience! This is what resonates most with prospective students and families – hearing from Queens alumni and students. We partner with our Alumni Office to host alumni panels during admissions events and have an active alumni council. Get involved however you can!
As you complete your time in financial aid, do you have any advice to share with alumni sending their kids to college soon?
Let your children own their experience. I know this is much easier said than done, but I can promise that those students who own their college experience have a much easier time navigating those tough situations and conversations when they arise. Your kids have got this, parents!
If you had to summarize it in one sentence, why should a student choose to attend Queens?
You won’t find another institution that has it all quite like Queens—hands-on academic and professional experiences and resources, a personalized education where professors know your name and interests, and all of the benefits of living in a thriving U.S. city.
