English Department

Our world needs graduates who can read critically, synthesize information, and write. The English department at Queens University of Charlotte prepares students for a range of careers, including professional writing, secondary education, law, and arts administration. Students can also go on to graduate work in all three majors as well as careers in the academic world.

With common requirements across majors, our programs are specifically designed to allow you to deepen your studies and expand your opportunities by double-majoring or adding a minor in another area.

The English Department also houses the university’s nationally ranked Low-Residency MFA Program in Creative Writing. Through the MFA program, undergraduate students regularly have opportunities to attend readings and presentations by award-winning and acclaimed authors—including recipients of the National Book Critics Circle Award and nominees for the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award—and by literary professionals, including literary agents and editors from The Gettysburg Review; The New Yorker; Farrar, Straus, and Giroux; Riverhead Books; and other magazines and presses.

Our students also benefit from other readings with visiting writers, Queens faculty, and students. You can also join the staff of the university literary magazine, Signet, or write and present your scholarship through QLit. Our students are also eligible for membership in Sigma Tau Delta, the international English honor society.
