Music & Music Therapy Auditions

Students wishing to major in the Music or Music Therapy programs must first apply for admission to Queens. To be admitted to either program, a successful audition must be completed and all audition requirements must be met.

Auditions are good for one year. If a year has passed, you must audition again.

Audition Components

  • Audition repertoire performance on primary instrument
  • Sight reading on primary instrument
  • Sight singing, pitch matching, and rhythmic assessment
  • Singing a familiar song with and without accompaniment
  • Interview with faculty

Prepared Pieces on Primary Instrument

Voice

Three contrasting selections, all to be performed from memory, including one selection in Italian, Spanish, or Latin: one art-song or aria in English or the original language, and one song in musical theatre.

Piano, Organ, Strings

Two contrasting works (Baroque, Classical, Romantic, Impressionistic, or 20th Century). All selections are encouraged to be performed from memory, but not required.

Guitar

Two works in contrasting style to be chosen from solo literature and/or etudes. All selections are encouraged to be performed from memory, but not required.

Woodwinds & Brass

Two works (one lyrical and one technical) of contrasting style periods from the standard repertoire, including movements of sonatas and concerti, or other solo pieces and longer etudes.

Percussion

Performance on two of the following areas is required. Snare drum: rudiments and a prepared solo or etude; Timpani: two solos in contrasting styles; Marimba: major scales and arpeggios, two solos in contrasting styles.

Harp

Two works in contrasting styles from the standard repertoire. Orchestra excerpts are also acceptable.
