Creative Writing Graduate Certificate

Meet Our Program

Designed for Master of Fine Arts (MFA) degree holders and professional writers, this program allows you to specialize in a new genre beyond the specialty genre of your MFA. With this certificate, you will work towards producing a full-length manuscript suitable for publication and a critical paper appropriate for publication on an aspect of the craft, profession, or pedagogy that pertains to your new genre. The genres offered are the same as in the Queens MFA program: fiction, poetry, creative non-fiction, and writing for stage and screen.

Student writing in notebook during class

You will master the ability to self-edit through multiple revisions and/or revise in response to others’ editing suggestions. Learn the formal and thematic requirements of your new genre, as well as demonstrate mastery of your craft at all levels: word choice, the construction of sentence and paragraph (for prose genres), line and verse (for poetry), dialogue (in writing for stage and screen), and the development of a discrete creative element (short story, chapter, poem, essay, or scene).
