John Belk International Program (JBIP) Funding
Thanks to the generosity of The Belk Foundation, in honor of the late John M. Belk, Queens is in the unique position to offer funding to all full-time, comprehensive tuition-paying students to use for a study abroad experience. Each student may use their JBIP funding once, and then pay for additional experiences in full.
There are some programs with no supplemental fee, while others have one. Having a supplemental fee means that the program cost exceeds the available JBIP funding. The Pulliam Center strives to keep supplemental costs below $1,000, but this is not always possible.
Billing & Financial Aid
All JBIP programs earn academic credit. This means that while you are abroad you will be registered for classes. Because of this, you will see the corresponding JBIP class on your academic schedule. If you are participating in a short-term faculty-led course with a Fall or Spring prep course and you are also a full-time student registered between 12 and 20 credits, the course credit will be included in your comprehensive tuition. If you are a part-time student or registered from more than 20 credits, you will see tuition charges at the per credit hour tuition rate.
Tuition is not charged for summer JBIP courses or programs unless you are doing an international internship and have already completed your required internship courses (in other words, are enrolling in INT 404 or 405 for an elective internship).
In order to help reduce barriers for our study abroad programs, any supplement fee associated with a JBIP program will be billed as a course fee in the Fall or Spring semester of travel. This allows students to use their financial aid package to help them choose the destination of their dreams.
Scholarships
Queens is proud to offer scholarship opportunities to our students participating in international programs. Applications are typically due in October. Currently there are three scholarships available through PCIE:
- The Dalton Scholarship for International Internships
- The Jo Dewitt International Adventurer Scholarship (Semester Abroad, Language Immersion, Summer Programs in China, France, & Wales)
- The Class of ’58 Scholarship (Short-term Faculty-Led)
There are also scholarship opportunities outside of PCIE. While we have several in mind, you are welcome and encouraged to find others on your own. The Institute of International Education has a useful database for finding scholarships based on your study abroad location.
- The Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship
- The Boren Scholarship
- Bridging Scholarship for Study Abroad in Japan
Additional Funding for Independent Program Participants
Students participating in semester or year abroad, language immersion, international internships, or summer programs in France, China or Wales have the opportunity to apply for supplemental funding through the Charles and Jane Hadley International Enrichment Fund. The Fund seeks to enable these students to engage in the local culture by experiencing an event or activity they might not otherwise have the funds to engage in. Learn more about the fund by on our Donors & Supporters webpage or by emailing the Pulliam Center for International Education (international@queens.edu).
Paying for JBIP Out-of-Pocket Students who have already had a JBIP experience, who are part-time students, or who wish to participate before they are eligible for JBIP funding, may do so at their own expense and as space is available (priority is given to Juniors and Seniors who have not yet studied abroad). Students should create a myJBIP account and complete the application for an open program. Applicants must indicate that they are a repeat, sophomore, or part-time student who is willing to pay full price in the comments section of the application. Students will then be contacted individually to discuss their placements and the financial implications with a study abroad advisor.
